14th European Association for Sociology of Sport Conference

Faculty of Physical Education and Sport, Charles University, 14th – 17th June 2017, Prague, Czech Republic

In the past 150 years or so, modern sport has gone through many changes, and taken many different forms, closely related to the development of society.

Nowadays, sport represents a highly diversified social phenomenon that can be interpreted and understood in a variety of ways and through a variety of approaches, and so it also presents us with many different and contested values.

Of course, it concerns active athletes, but also those who do not practice sports themselves; it is part of the voluntary sector, but it concerns commerce; it is part of the private sphere, but it has also become part of public policy; it concerns local activity and organisations, but is also important in international politics.

This conference aims to examine the values of sport across this diversity, and from a variety of critical perspectives.
